چکیده
results of 50 patients, 20 were men and 30 women with mean age of 61.1 ± 16.9 years ranged between 22 and 85 years. all samples of pterygia had positive results for adenoviruses dna with polymerase chain reaction, but none of the negative control groups displayed adenoviruses. the pterygium group and the control groups were β-globin positive. direct sequencing of pcr products confirmed adenovirus infection. conclusions adenoviruses might act as a possible cause of pterygium formation and other factors could play a synergistic role in the development. however, further larger studies are required to confirm this hypothesis. patients and methods fifty tissue specimens of pterygium from patients undergoing pterygium surgery (as cases), 50 conjunctival swab samples from the same patients and 10 conjunctival biopsy specimens from individuals without pterygium such as patients undergoing cataract surgery (as controls) were analyzed for evidence of adenovirus infection with polymerase chain reaction using specific primers chosen from the moderately conserved region of the hexon gene. furthermore, β-globin primers were used to access the quality of extracted dna. data was analyzed using spss (version 16) software. objectives for the first time, we aimed to investigate involvement of adenoviruses in pterygium formation. background ophthalmic pterygium is a common benign lesion of unknown origin and the pathogenesis might be vision-threatening. this problem is often associated with exposure to solar light. recent evidence suggests that potentially oncogenic viruses such as human papillomavirus and epstein-barr virus may be involved in the pathogenesis of pterygia. expression of specific adenovirus genes such as e1a and e1b, which potentially have many functions, may contribute to their oncogenic activity as well as relevance to cellular immortalization.

Ophthalmic Pterygium
Pterygia are common ocular surface lesions thought to originate from limbal stem cells altered by chronic UV exposure. Traditionally regarded as a degenerative condition, pterygia also display tumor-like features, such as a propensity to invade normal tissue and high recurrence rates following resection, and may coexist with secondary premalignant lesions. This study was initiated to determine ...

Abstract Background and Objective: Ophthalmic pterygium is a potentially vision-threatening lesion of unknown etiology that often extends on the corneal surface and has a worldwide distribution. Despite various studies, the pathogenesis of pterygium remains unclear and the involvement of human papillomavirus is controversial. We aimed to investigate the involvement of papillomavirus in pte...

Mitomycin C in the form of eye drops in a concentration of 0.4 mg/ml (0.04%) was used as adjunctive treatment for primary and recurrent pterygium after surgical excision. The study was concurrent in nature and consisted of 32 pterygia in 30 patients and was done over a period of 36 months. The object was to observe the effect of mitomycin C drops on pterygium recurrence after surgical excision....
متن کاملRole of Ophthalmic Nurses in Prevention of Ophthalmic Diseases
There are numerous ocular problems that could be diagnosed and detected by well-trained ophthalmic nurses. Ophthalmic nurses may significantly contribute in ophthalmology and visual sciences. These trained nurses may assist in decrease the rate of cancelled surgical operations at the date of operation that had been due to lack of attention to health problems in pre-operative assessments. Furthe...
متن کاملMolecular evolution of human adenoviruses
The recent emergence of highly virulent human adenoviruses (HAdVs) with new tissue tropisms underscores the need to determine their ontogeny. Here we report complete high quality genome sequences and analyses for all the previously unsequenced HAdV serotypes (n = 20) within HAdV species D. Analysis of nucleotide sequence variability for these in conjunction with another 40 HAdV prototypes, comp...
